• Obsidian: Named after the Roman Obsius supposed to have discovered this stone in Ethiopia.

Group, Family:

• Family of natural glasses.

Color :

• Black, Gray, Brown Ribbons, Rarely Green to Dark Green, Blue to Dark Blue, Red, Sometimes Iridescence (Celestial Eye), Black spotted with white flakes of Christobalite (Snowy Obsidian), Sometimes golden or silver.

• Glassy.

• United States, Mexico, Japan, Hawaii.

• Amorphous.

Chemical composition :

• SiO2 (66 to 72% + Oxides of Ca, Na, K, etc. Basalt glasses are approximately 50% SiO2).
