Lingam Shiva

Shiva Lingam

Shiva Lingam:

  • The origin of the stone, like its name, comes from India.
  • The word “lingam” represents the masculine attribute (symbol of creation) and Shiva is a Hindu god.
  • The Shiva lingam is therefore a sacred object for this religion, which is found in many temples left as offerings.

    • The name “Namadeshwar” means “Lord of Narmada”. This last name is the one which designates the sacred stone coming from the river. The Shiva lingam can be carved in a multitude of materials such as gold, silver, wood, crystal and also in a black basalt, hence the black Shiva lingam. The most sought after however being the Narmadeshwar lingam.
    • According to legend, the Narmadeshwar lingam were created millions of years ago, in a mountainous province in central India, in Madhya Pradesh. A meteorite collided with the earth causing intense heat, melting the rock. Over the millennia, a river, the Narmada, was formed and flowed in this place. This river is one of the seven sacred rivers of India, just like the Ganges or the Indus. Rocks are carried by the waves, rolled and shaped each year, just before the start of the monsoon while the river is at its lowest in its bed, a stone harvest takes place.

    • Villagers collect the sacred stones. Only a few families (from generation to generation) have been trained in the art of choosing the lingam. These stones are then polished and polished by hand (in accordance with Vedic tradition), to bring out the natural colors of the iron oxide which composes them. It takes several months to polish a large lingam. Twenty to thirty large stones are removed from the river each year.

    • The Indian government wants to build a dam on the Narmada River. Already rare in quantity, these stones will then be almost impossible to harvest and their value will be even more precious.
    • It is difficult to know the true mineralogical composition of this stone. It would be a kind of jasper (microcrystalline quartz) containing, among other things, iron oxide or steatite. Due to its composition, the Shiva lingam is one of the most difficult minerals to work with because it is very hard.
    • Opaque, its color varies from beige to brown and often veined with red (due to iron oxide). No two stones are identical.
    • As said above, the deposit is found only in the bed of the Narmada River in India.
