• A metrine is a gem variety of Quartz which is not a variety of Amethyst but a mixture of Citrine and Amethyst.
• Amethyst and Ametrine (variety of quartz).

Etymology:

• Amethyst: From the Greek amethustos = which protects from drunkenness.
• Ametrine: Contraction of Amethyst and Citrine.

Group, Family:

• Quartz family (Crystalline).

Color :

• Amethyst: Blue-mauve, violet, dark magenta, violet-magenta, sometimes shimmering, rarely asterism.
• Ametrine: Multicolor (two colors): Color of Amethyst and Citrine (Dark Yellow to Orange) following more or less clear areas.

Chandelier:

• Glassy.

Origin :

• Uruguay, Brazil, Germany, France, Madagascar, Romania, Czech Republic...
• Ametrine: Uruguay, Brazil, Bolivia...

Crystal system:

• Trigonal.

Chemical composition :

• SiO2 | Coloration: Amethyst: Probably Charge Transfer 02- => Fe4+; Citrine: Probably Charge Transfer O2- => Fe3+; Ametrine: Probably a result of both of the above.

Transparency:

• Transparent.

Density :

• Generally very constant around 2.650 to 2.651 (NB: framework taken from 2.64 to 2.66 in case of inclusions).

Hardness :

• 7.

Cleavage:

• Zero to Imperfect.

Breakage:

• Conchoidal, Scaly.

Line color:

• White.

Shock resistance:

• Good.

Heat resistance:

• Bad (possible color change towards yellow. Be careful not to confuse it with natural Citrine because very often heated Amethysts are sold for Citrine).

• Ametrine being a mixture of Amethyst and Citrine, therefore includes the virtues of these last two minerals.
