Etymology:

Its name comes from the Greek “ a-methustes ” or “ amethhistos ” meaning “which protects from drunkenness”. Indeed, in ancient times, the Greeks considered it a good remedy against drunkenness. This is why the chalices of the time were often encrusted with Amethysts.

History :

  • Since the Middle Ages, amethyst has been credited with encouraging celibacy, faith and humility. For this reason, it was considered the dominant episcopal stone and was widely used as an inlay in the ornamental objects of the Catholic church. Leonardo da Vinci wrote that Amethyst was capable of “dispelling evil thoughts and accelerating intelligence.” It is said that the person who wears it gains seriousness and credibility.

Family :

  • Amethyst is part of the large quartz family, just like Citrine, Ametrine, rock crystal, smoky quartz, prasiolite, etc. It is dichroic, meaning that it has the property of having a different color depending on the angle of observation.

Color :

  • purple-blue, purple-red, purple-gray. A strong dichroism turning purple-red is an excellent quality criterion. If Amethyst undergoes heat treatment, it becomes either yellow (Citrine), green (Prasiolite), or purple-brown (resembling Smoky Quartz). This treatment is stable and permanent, unless the Amethyst is again subjected to a temperature above 200°.

There are different kinds of amethyst:

Amethyst from Brazil:

Amethyst from Brazil
  • It is the best known of the Amethysts, it is renowned, in particular, for its spectacular geodes which can sometimes reach 2 meters high. When they do not form geodes, Amethyst crystals line the walls of veins and it is in the form of aggregates, or groups of crystals, that we encounter it most.

Amethyst from Uruguay:

It does not form geodes but sometimes small cavities that are cut into the bedrock. Uruguayan Amethyst particularly appeals to demanding enthusiasts and collectors. It sometimes appears in the form of groups of crystals forming domes.

Purification and recharging:

  • Amethyst is also used to recharge other minerals as the frequency of a geode and as a reminder of the bowels of the earth in which all the minerals are in the beginning. You can therefore place your jewelry and minerals at the heart of your geode, no need to own a specimen like this one below, which will cost you a lot of money
