Vanadinite on Barite
Presentation :
- Etymology: from the Greek "barrus" = heavy, due to its high density.
- Its genesis is mainly hydrothermal. It consists of barium, a crumb of lead, a hint of calcium and may contain traces of strontium. When heated, it becomes thermoluminescent.
- Chemistry: Ba SO 4 barium sulfate.
Crystal system: orthorhombic.
- Hardness: 3 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale.
- Vitreous, resinous appearance and appears in flat, lamellar crystals.
Deposits:
- Barite deposits are numerous, but the most notable are the Cumberland iron mines in England, Romania, Spain, Morocco and Peru. In France, the St Laurent le Minier mine in Gard, supplied white barite "ponpons" renowned throughout the world.
