Galena
Presentation :
- Mineral composed of lead sulfide with the formula PbS. From Latin galena and Greek galene, “lead ore”. It was cited by Pliny as early as 77.
- Most abundant lead ore. There are many deposits of a mixture of galena and silver throughout the world. It is from the Silberthalrûcken vein, Silberthal, Cernay, Haut-Rhin, France that the most beautiful specimens of crystals have been discovered.
- It was in 1874 that Karl Ferdinant Braun discovered the semiconductor properties of galena: contact between a metal tip and a crystal of galena can form what we today call a Schottky diode. This made it possible to design the radio receiver: the galena station. This discovery earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics which he shared with Guglielmo Marconi in 1909.
- Galena was used as a lead ore since Antiquity (at least -3000 BC) and as a black dye.
