Names) : 

• Spinel, Gahnospinel and Ceylanite: Cobalt-bearing spinel, Pleonaste.

Etymology: 

• Perhaps from Latin spina=epine (Agricola, 1546) | Gahnospinel: Based on the mixture between Spinel and Gahnite | Ceylanite: According to the island of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) | Pleonaste: From the Greek pleonasmos = surplus (Hauy, 1801).

Group, Family: 

• Spinel Group.

Color : 

• Red, Orange, dark yellow, yellow, apple green, light green, green, dark green, green-black (Ceylanite and Pleonaste variety), blue, Light blue, dark blue to blue-black (Gahnospinelle), blue-mauve, blue intense/deep (Cobalt Spinel), violet, purple, dark magenta, magenta, red-magenta, brown, black (Ceylanite and Pleonaste variety); Sometimes Asterism (4, 6, rarely 12 or even 18) or Chatoyance. Rarely changes color.

Chandelier: 

• Glassy.

Origin : 

• Myanmar (formerly Burma), Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Russia, Italy, Africa: Tanzania, etc.

Crystal system: 

• Cubic.

Chemical composition : 

• Spinel: MgAl204 forms three series with: 1) Magnesiochromite: MgCr2O4 | 2) Gahnite: ZnAl2O4 with Gahnospinel: (Mg,Zn)Al2O4 as intermediate member | 3) Hercynite: Fe2+Al2O4 with Ceylanite: (Mg,Fe2+)Al2O4 as intermediate member. | Coloration: Blue-gray to Green-bluish: Iron in Fe3+ and Fe2+ form in tetrahedral coordination | Deep blue: Cobalt in Co2+ form and Iron in Fe2+ form in tetrahedral coordination | Pink to Red: Chromium in Cr3+ form in octahedral coordination | Violet to Purple: See Red+Blue-gray, etc.

Properties and virtues:

Physical virtues:

• Helps reduce fatigue and replenish energy at all levels.

Environmental virtues:

• It has properties close to those of black tourmaline but more intense, particularly strong for anchoring those who are a little in the clouds. It is a very strong protective stone which returns the negative to its source.

Cleaning, recharging, reprogramming:

• Cleaning with clear spring water or filtered water (never salt in the water. Salt alters the structure of the mineral and the abyss). Soak the mineral overnight in an unmarked glass container, and then take it out in the morning to rinse it with new spring or filtered water.
• Direct recharge on a crystal or amethyst druse, in a crystal or amethyst geode. You can also place a dozen laser or rock crystals in a circle (like a time dial), points toward the center, and place your minerals in the center to recharge them. Another method, place your minerals in a singing bowl: Tibetan or crystal bowl, (on a cotton cloth to avoid bowl/mineral vibrations), then ring the bowl to fill your minerals with this sound energy. Last method, place your minerals on a disc (wood or mineral) engraved with the flower of life or the seal of Solomon or any other forms of sacred geometry.
• Reprogramming: Reprogramming consists not of telling your mineral what it should or should not do, but of putting the mineral in resonate with you to ask him to do what he needs to do, for you. Reprogramming must be done after each cleaning and must remain simple.
