Presentation:
Etymology and history:
- The name kyanite comes from the Greek "di" which means "two" and "destenos" which means "force" due to the difference in electrical property depending on the direction of the crystal. The inventor is René-Just Haüy in the 18th century. The name kyanite or kyanite comes from the Greek "kuanos" which means "blue" due to the color of the stone. The inventor was Abraham Gottlob Werner in 1789.
Mineralogical properties:
- Kyanite, which we call Kyanite, Kyanite, Rhaeticite or Munkrudite depending on the elements incorporated by substitution in their structure, is a mineral of category IX: silicates, with the crude formula AI 2 SiO 5. Kyanite is a mineral of rich metamorphic rocks in aluminum of changing pressure and temperature, quartz and pegmatite. Blue, triclinic, tertiary aluminum neosilicate.
Color :
- Green, Light green, Yellow, Blue, Sky blue, Light blue, Gray, Light gray, Pink, White Black. Its name recalls its dominant color, blue in Greek (cyan).
- Sometimes colorless, but generally blue to bluish green, this gem has a hardness varying with its texture in planes, ranging from 4.5 (direction of elongation) to 6 to 7 (perpendicular to elongation). It also has areas of different tones of blue which allow it to be identified.
- A green variety was recently discovered as well as orange crystals in Africa. In Nepal and Kashmir, blue kyanites have a color shade close to that of sapphires.
- Kyanite is polymorphic with sillimanite and andalusite, it has the same chemical composition but the shape of its crystals is different. Blue kyanites owe their color to titanium and iron (like sapphires), green ones to vanadium and orange ones to manganese.
Deposits:
- Blue kyanites from Nepal and Kashmir in India are sought after for their color shade close to that of sapphire. Kyanite is polymorphic with sillimanite and andalusite, it has the same chemical composition but the shape of its crystals is different.
