Presentation :

Often confused with jade despite its much lower hardness 2.5 to 4 for Serpentine compared to 6.5 to 7 for Jade and Jadeite.

Etymology:

  • Serpentine: From the Latin serpens = snake (French, 1753) | Antigorite: From the locality of Antigorio (Italy) (Schweitzer, 1840) | Chrysotile: From the Greek khrusos = gold and tilos = fibers (Kobell 1834) and prefix Ortho or Clino according to the crystal system. | Lizardite: From the locality of Lizard (England). | Bowenite: From GT Bowen. | Williamsite: From LW Williams who first discovered this variety of Antigorite.

Group, Family:

  • Kaolinite-Serpentine Group | 4 Minerals with similar formula but different properties (Antigorite, Orthochrysotile, Clinochrysotile, Lizardite) and their varieties (Bowenite, Williamsite).

Color :

  • White, Gray, Yellowish-yellow, Translucent apple green (Williamsite), Light green to Dark green-Blue-green (Bowenite), Magenta to Red-magenta, Brown to Black (Serpentine asbestos). Luster: Resinous, Oily, Pearly, Waxy, Earthy.

Serpentine Varieties:

  • There are several varieties of serpentine. Some can be as toxic as asbestos, but rest assured, these are not used in lithotherapy. The others, however, are, despite some differences in characteristics, quite identical in terms of their intrinsic virtues.

    Cleaning, recharging, reprogramming:

    • Clean with clear spring water or filtered water (never add salt to the water. Salt alters the structure of the mineral and the abyss). Soak the mineral overnight in an unmarked glass container, then take it out in the morning to rinse it with fresh spring or filtered water.
    • Direct charging on a crystal or amethyst druse, in a crystal or amethyst geode. You can also place a dozen laser crystals or rocks in a circle (like a time dial), with the points towards the center, and place your minerals in the center to charge them. Another method is to place your minerals in a singing bowl: Tibetan or crystal bowl, (on a cotton cloth to avoid bowl/mineral vibrations), then ring the bowl to fill your minerals with this sound energy.
