Purple Opal:

Presentation :

  • Opal is formed when water leaches silica and it is deposited on layers of sandy clay during a period of drought. The term opal therefore designates a family of minerals composed of silica and water with inclusions of various elements, it is hydrated silicon dioxide.
  • It is sometimes found in place of shells or bones. The location of the gems in the mine is therefore unpredictable, they must be searched for by hand or with small machines to avoid the risk of breaking them.
  • Chemical formula: SiO2, nH2O
  • Crystal system: None
  • Density: 1.98 to 2.50
  • Hardness: 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale
  • Luminescence under ultraviolet rays: White, yellow, greenish-yellow or green.
  • The proportion of water varies from 1 to 27%.
  • Deposits: In the past, opals came from Egypt, India or Saudi Arabia. Today, Australia produces 90% of the opals sold in the world, precious gems of very high quality. These deposits were discovered by German geologist Johannes Menge in 1849. One of them, Lightning Ridge, revealed opalinized dinosaur skeletons.
Other opal producing countries are Brazil, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Russia and the United States.
  • Etymology of the name: “Opal” comes from the Sanskrit Upala, via the Greek “Opallios” which designates changes in color.

Stories and legends:

  • Some Australian Aboriginal groups have a legend imbued with poetry in their mythology: the creator god would one day descend to Earth by gliding on a rainbow. As soon as he set foot on the ground, all the stones would have started to sparkle, the same colors as the rainbow...
For Pliny the Elder, opal was wonderful because it combined the colors and qualities of all other precious stones.
  • In India opal is the symbol of the Trinity (Trimûrti) formed by the creator god Brahma, the preserver Vishnu and the destroyer Shiva.
  • The Greeks considered opal to be a bringer of hope and a symbol of purity. It had the reputation of increasing clairvoyance, making meditation and reflection easier, and improving intuition.
  • Many other legends surround opal around the world.
